Jon Miles

Jonathan J. Miles, Ph.D., currently serves as Professor in the School of Integrated Sciences and Executive Director of the Office for the Advancement of Sustainable Energy at James Madison University (JMU), and also serves as Affiliate Professor in the Institute for Earth Systems at the University of Malta (UoM). Prof. Miles co-founded and directed (2009-14) the EU/US, dual-degree Masters of Science program in Sustainable Environmental Resources Management administered jointly by JMU and UoM. While on Intergovernmental Personnel Act (IPA) assignment from JMU (2007-09) he served as Energy Specialist at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) where he provided support to DOE’s Wind Powering America program, with emphasis on mid-Atlantic and southeastern regions. Prof. Miles was also a Research Fellow at the NASA Langley Research Center (1997) where he designed and tested a prototype instrument comprising an optical imaging system, mechanical apparatus, and software to feasibility-test a method to image carbon monoxide in the troposphere. Prof. Miles currently serves as Principal Investigator on a range grants and contracts sponsored by federal and state agencies, industry, and private foundations. He holds a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a B.A. in Physics from Clark University.
